Epic Food Mission distributes food boxes the first and third Thursday of the month. It requires clients to have a photo I.D. and proof of residence to receive the food.
Distribution of the emergency boxes, which began last April, has supplied 880 food boxes to families and helped 4,300 people in the past year, Rooney said.
“I am so thankful for people and their huge hearts,” Rooney said. “This has really been the most rewarding thing I have ever done.”
The content of the boxes varies based on the donations the mission receives, Rooney said.
The organization aims to provide foods that can be used as whole meals, such as pasta, macaroni and cheese and tuna, she said.
According to the United Food Bank, 14.2 percent of Arizonans were living in poverty in 2005.
In the future, Epic Food Mission would like to be able to distribute food boxes weekly, Rooney said.
“These clients are amazing,” she said. “These boxes are such a blessing for these families.”
