District Attorney Mitch Morrissey has charged a man with murder in the 2005 death of a disabled woman who was fatally stabbed and beaten.
Gerald Cooper, 47, has been charged with first-degree murder, two counts of felony murder, first-degree burglary and sexual contact with force.
Authorities did not release the name of the murder victim, according to Lynn Kimbrough, Morrissey’s spokeswoman.
On July 11, 2005, the woman was found in her apartment on the 1200 block of Galapago Street, Kimbrough said.
Cooper allegedly forced his way into the woman’s apartment, assaulted her, killed her and then stole items from her apartment.
The case remained unsolved until Cooper’s DNA was matched with DNA evidence found in the woman’s apartment, she said.
Cooper is currently serving a prison term at the Sterling Correctional Facility after he was convicted of second degree assault in an attack of a woman in the same apartment complex as the murdered woman, Kimbrough said.
In that case, he was originally charged with first-degree assault with a weapon, drugging a victim and sexual assault, according to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records.
Cooper will be advised of the murder charges on Feb. 15, she said.
The suspect has an extensive criminal history including an arrest Sept. 20, 1978 for sexual assault, according to CBI records.
The record does not indicate whether Cooper was convicted of the crime.
He was given a deferred sentence in 1995 for burglary and a 2-year-prison sentence in 1997 for larceny, according to CBI records.
